Hyderabad, Jun 30: The Andhra Pradesh government has appointed V Dinesh Reddy as its new director general of police.
Reddy is an IPS officer of the 1977 batch. He will serve a two-year term before retiring in September 2013.
He will be taking over from K Aravinda Rao.
The post had first been offered to K R Nandan, an officer of the 1975 batch. Nandan, the son-in-law of former Prime Minister Narasimha Rao, refused the offer on the grounds that the government had neglected him twice for the post.
The government has once again ignored officers senior to Dinesh Reddy, and even his predecessor Aravinda Rao had been appointed while officers senior to Rao had been ignored. Home secretary Gautam Kumar had even challenged Rao's appointment.
Reddy who is from Nellore in Andhra, served as the director general of vigilance and enforcement before his appointment as the DGP.
He has also rendered his services as commissioner of police in Hyderabad and as superintendent of police in various districts.
