Udupi, Apr 9: In a bid to create awareness among voters and the importance of their right to cast their franchise in the upcoming elections to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, the district SVEEP committee has taken several steps to increase the poll percentage in the district on ahead of the polling date of May 10.

The district SVEEP committee has taken up a unique initiative to attract voters residing abroad and in other states to come to the polling booths on the polling day and cast their votes in the district.

People belonging to the district have migrated to other towns, cities and countries for the purpose of studies and better employment prospects. But, their names continue to figure in the voters list as they have registered themselves as voters. They are in constant touch with their families who live here and often make it a point to visit their homes during festivals and annual vacations.

The district SVEEP committee is keen to have a greater participation in the democratic process among the people who are residing outside the district to raise the poll percentage on May 10 when the state goes to polls.

With the social media all pervasive it is easier for people to be in touch with their families living in the district. The committee has taken upon itself the additional responsibility to reach out to those who are living outside through various social media platforms such as Zoom and YouTube by interacting with officials, CEOs and people's representatives explaining to them the importance of casting their votes.

The SVEEP committee is planning to hold online meetings via Zoom or YouTube with ZP CEO and other government officials in this regard.

The SVEEP is keen to bring home those voters residing outside the country as well to cast their votes by establishing contacts through their parents and near and dear ones living here. The committee is impressing upon parents to write to their children to visit the district to cast their votes. In the letter, there's also a mention of the schools in which they have studied and the facelift and makeover the institution had got ahead of the elections. Besides, they are also keen that they also meet their old friends and relatives and reestablish their old ties.

The non-residents who number thousands enjoy an emotional connect with their past and the district. They are also concerned about the goings-on and the development story in their districts which makes it even more important for them to choose the right candidate in the elections so that they serve the electorate and nurse the constituency well and also look after the district's interests.

Keeping all these in mind, district SVEEP committee president Prasanna H and ZP CEO are devising all innovative means to encourage people to exercise their right to vote in the elections.
