Bantwal, April 12: A bike rider died at Jakribettu when his bike collided with a KSRTC bus.

The deceased is 30-year-old Sarapady resident Sesappa, also known as Sreyas. He was unmarried and employed as a driver in a private company.

The accident occurred when he was returning home after work. Sreyas was travelling to his Sarapady residence from B C Road on the Dharmastala highway. The government bus, speeding towards Dharmastala, lost control and collided with Sreyas' bike approaching from the opposite direction.

The impact of the collision severely damaged the bike, and Sreyas sustained critical injuries. He was immediately taken to Bantwal government hospital and later transferred to Mangaluru via 108 ambulance. However, he succumbed to his injuries during the ambulance ride, according to hospital sources.

Traffic SI Murthy visited the scene and registered a case.

Despite precautionary measures, the widening of the B C Road - Dharmastala state highway has seen an increase in accidents. The local MLA, who recently arrived with officers, suggested the installation of speed breakers near curves and wherever necessary to prevent accidents. However, the locals lament that accidents have not decreased.

May his soul RIP. Very unfortunate to read such bad news of MVA fatalities almost every day from Mangalore and surrounding areas. The number of accidents in rural areas too is showing an upward trajectory. One reason for this could be the heavy increase in the number of two wheelers; almost every house boasts of at least one two wheeler. The broadening of the roads has increased the propensity of accidents manifold due to the scope of overspeeding and reckless driving even in curvy regions! Only increasing awareness and education among the drivers is the last resort to curb such avoidable tragedies.

Speed breakers are not the solution, rather they are dangerous, especially on the curves. They can cause imbalance to two-wheeler riders and cause accidents. The solution is to do away with too many curves, which was the original plan while widening this road. Because of the corruption and percentage issues, the contractor had to manage with whatever little funds he had. The second and most important solution is to inculcate in road users a sense of safe and correct driving. RTO should be strict in testing the candidates before issuing driver's licenses.

Driving licence requirements should be like that of UAE; but what can you expect from a place where if you pay a few thousand rupees to the agent, driving licence is delivered at your doorstep?
