Cash-For-Votes Scam - Delhi Police Asked to Report

New Delhi, July 7 (IANS): The Supreme Court Thursday asked the Delhi Police to file a status report on its investigations into bribery charges during a trust vote in parliament in 2008.

An apex court bench by Justice Aftab Alam and Justice R.M. Lodha directed the Delhi Police to file the report within a week.

The cash-for-votes scam had rocked India when money was allegedly paid to certain Lok Sabha members to secure their votes for a trust vote after the Left parties withdrew support to the United Progressive Alliance government on the India-US civilian nuclear deal.

The court overruled the petition by Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium seeking another two months for the Delhi Police to finish its investigations.

The court order came during the hearing on a petition by former chief election commissioner J.M. Lyngdoh, saying the Delhi Police had not investigated the scam though a first information report had been filed three years ago.

The next date of hearing is July 15.
