New Delhi, Jul 8: Minister for Telecommunications, Kapil Sibal has been alleged by a non governmental organization of abusing his position by favouring private firm Reliance communications by reducing a penalty of Rs 650 crore to Rs 5 crore for the grant of 2G licenses.
The NGO Centre for Public Interest Ligitation also filed a petition seeking CBI probe into attorney general G E Vahanvati in connection to the 2G spectrum issue.
The applicant stated that the attorney general had permitted the grant of 2G licenses to Swan Telecom, a front company of Reliance Group.
Sibal brushed off such allegations saying that the figures cited by Centre for Public Interest Ligitation (CPIL) NGO in their petition were incorrect and misleading.
To prove his statement, Sibal cited a communication dated Februry 8, 2011 from Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) that shows the imposition of Rs 50 crore penalty against Reliance Communication for 'violation of terms and conditions' of the Fund for 'voluntary, unilateral and unauthorized closure to users.
