Lucknow, July 11 (IANS) The toll in the Kalka Mail derailment in Uttar Pradesh rose to 50 Monday as more bodies were pulled out from the wreckage of the mangled coaches with rescue operations still underway, an official said.
"Around 15 more bodies have been recovered since late Sunday, and now the number of casualties have gone up to 50," Sub Divisional Magistrate Ram Chandra told IANS on telephone from Fatehpur, some 140 km from here.
"...bodies have been taken out from most of the damaged coaches," he added.
According to officials, sniffer dogs have been pressed into service as the authorities believe some passengers could still be trapped in a coach.
Fatehpur's Chief Medical Officer Keshav Narain Joshi said that at least 150 passengers were injured.
The accident took place Sunday noon as the Kalka Mail was nearing the Malwan railway station in Fatehpur district. Fourteen coaches were derailed over two adjoining rail tracks, sealing off the busy route to Howrah from where the train was coming.
The overturned coaches included the air-conditioned ones and the pantry car. At least one coach was crushed by another.
