Kolkata, July 12 (IANS) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Tuesday accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of perpetrating violence on Left supporters.
"Since the declaration of (assembly) polls, not a single day has passed without violence. People are being attacked, party offices are being ransacked and captured by the Trinamool. Strangely, the administration, instead of preventing the violence, is acting as a facilitator," Bhattacharjee said at a protest rally in the city.
"When will all this stop? Our supporters are being attacked, driven out of their offices. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless. The farmers are being denied from ploughing their fields by the government, which says the plots are not theirs.
"Then whose fields are they? I want to know to whom has the government given the land deeds.
"All this is not acceptable. We will not take things lying down. We have planned rallies to protest across the state. The government needs to take steps," Bhattacharjee said.
He added that his party was keeping a close watch on the new government's policies.
"We are keeping a close watch on the government, its policies. What the condition of Junglemahal (Maoist affected forested stretches in Purulia, West Midnapore and Bankura districts) is now. We are also keeping a tab on what is happening in schools, colleges, the state secretariat, we are keeping a vigil on whatever the government is doing," he said.
Bhattacharjee also attacked the Congress-led central government for price rise and "anti-people policies".
"The policies of the Congress are always anti-people. Kerosene, diesel, cooking gas have all become dearer, which have badly affected the poor. People are protesting against this across the country.
"We need to intensify the protests. We need to compel the government to change its policies. Then only will the prices come down," said Bhattacharjee.
