Finnair to Operate its First Biofuel Powered Flight

Helsinki, Jul 14 (IANS): Nordic air carrier Finnair will operate its first biofuel powered flight between Amsterdam and Helsinki from next week, an official said Thursday.

Finnair's flight will use biofuel made from recycled vegetable oil in a fuel mixture which will have 50 percent biofuel and 50 percent aviation fuel, said Kati Ihamäki, vice president, sustainable development, Finnair.

"We want to be a pioneer in sustainable development in air transport. Engine emissions account for the biggest environmental impact of flying," he said.

The company plans to operate at least three such flights between Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, and Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Environment friendly biofuels are made from renewable organic raw materials like plants and have potential to reduce aviation emissions by up to 80 percent in long-term.
