Mangaluru, Jun 26: The National Cadet Corps, a nationwide youth organization, aims at developing qualities of character, courage, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, a spirit of adventure and sportsmanship and the ideas of selfless service among the youth to make them better human beings, better citizens and ultimately an asset to the nation who would contribute positively towards nation building irrespective of the fields they choose to work in their professional careers. It also provides a suitable environment to motivate the cadets for joining the armed forces which is one of the most challenging yet very satisfying career options in today’s scenario.
Keeping this aim in mind, the team of 6 Kar Air Sqn NCC, Mangaluru, led by their Commanding Officer, Wg Cdr Chandan Garg, conducted an Annual Training Camp for the Senior Division/Senior Wing and Junior Division/ Junior Wing NCC cadets at St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor from June 14 to 23. A total of 382 cadets took part in camp which included 162 senior cadets from four colleges and 220 junior cadets from nine different schools including schools from Virajpet, Dharmasthala and Puttur.
The aim of the camp was to provide quality all round training to the cadets. The training for all the cdts used to start early morning with physical training and drill sessions. Thereafter, lectures were held on various topics that include NCC common subjects, special aviation related subjects like Principles of flight, Airmanship, Airframes, Instruments, Airmanship, and so on. Also there were guest lectures on many relevant topics such as Road safety and Traffic rules by Assistant RTO, Cyber Security and social media by Cyber Crime dept of State Police, a lecture and demo on Fire hazards and Safety by Fire stn offr, Types of snakes and handling them by an expert.
The Sqn undertook firing of 0.22 rifles wherein they practiced firing on fixed target at 25 yard in grouping and application formats. After a gap of at least many years, the Sqn employed an experienced Aero modeling Instructor who took aeromodelling sessions for the cadets every day and was able to successfully fly a control line aero-model by the end of the camp. The cultural values were encouraged by keeping them engaged in informal cultural gatherings, wherein they practiced and then participated in various events like group song, group dance and skit.
The Sqn also arranged a visit for 225 cadets in batches to the Mangalore airport, in specific, the NCC Hangar. This was undertaken to provide a first hand experience to the cadets and familiarize them with the airfireld layout and Microlight Virus aircraft of the Sqn.
One of the highlights of the ATC, especially for the senior cadets, was the EXPA CADET program on 17 and 18 Jun 23. EXPA stands for NCC Exchange Participants Association of India wherein the EXPA volunteers conducted trg sessions on various aspects of personality development like communication, public speaking, creative thinking, leadership and team building for the senior cadets which helped them have an insight into their capabilities and to develop them further.
On the occasion of International Yoga Day on 21 June, the squadron undertook a yoga session under the guidance of a Certified and experienced Yoga instructor for all the cadets and staff. The Sqn also organized a blood donation drive on 22 Jun 23 in which a total of 50 units of life saving blood were collected from the cadets and staff of the Sqn and also students of SJEC, Vamanjoor.
During the camp, besides the routine of various training activities, the Sqn undertook competitions between cadets in various disciplines such as Individual Drill, Contingent Drill and Written exam on common and special subjects. The Sqn also conducted inter-flight volleyball championship wherein all institutions participated enthusiastically and the spectators cheered their hearts out. The aim of undertaking all these competitions was to promote a healthy competitive spirit which encourages them all to perform better in every sphere. The award for the overall best institution in senior category was won by St Aloysius College, Mangalore and that for the junior category was won by St Aloysius High School, Mangaluru. After accomplishment of a wide variety of training activities, the Camp successfully concluded on June 23.
