Udupi, Jul 29: District block Congress in association with Udupi district NSUI and district Youth Congress staged a protest on Saturday on July 29 against the state government over unrest in Manipur and demanded presidential rule in the state.
In the protest, Udupi Congress demanded the arrest of the people behind the viral video of women paraded naked in Manipur.
Ramesh Kanchan, president Udupi block Congress said, “If MLA Yashpal Suvarna does not trust the police department and Khushbu Sundar, the member of the NCW, you can send Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat to investigate the case. And remember that you are an MLA. Do not play with the life of students to gain political mileage. I urge the MLA to focus on developmental activities.”
Jyothi Hebbar, chief secretary Udupi district Congress said, “It is very disappointing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not speak on the issue until recently. There are many incidents where the PM has failed to provide justice to women. He failed to provide justice to international level women wrestlers, then how can common women expect justice. Where is your slogan ‘Beti Bhachao, Beti Padao’? During elections, the PM visited Karnataka 19 times, but he did not visit Manipur even once. India has 50 percent of women population. If you are neglecting that 50 percent population, then you must decide if you really need the PM’s position. The BJP leaders who gave speech on soldiers never felt the pain when a soldier’s wife was burnt alive in a room. It is shameful matter.”
Deepak Kotian, president Udupi District Youth Congress said, “The suspects, if found guilty in the college washroom video, must be given death penalty. People in Udupi approach the candidates who lost in the state elections due to which the MLA is miffed. Hence, they are creating such issues. We trust the Udupi police department that they will provide justice in the case.”
Sudheer Kumar Marolli, Koppa block president said, “The ruler of the nation should always have feelings, affection and kindness. We are holding this protest to spread awareness that the situation in Manipur may come to Udupi in future. The Congress always looks people as Indians, regardless of their caste, creed and economic state. PM Modi has disappointed all for not reacting on Manipur issue. It is disappointing to see that the MLA of Udupi politicising the washroom video incident.”
M A Gafoor, veteran Congress leader and social worker said, “Our Prime Minister had stayed silent on Manipur issue, where women were ill-treated. Our protest is to inform people of Manipur that we are with you. The PM who said I will follow the constitution has never visited Manipur after the violence began.”
Kishan Hegde, working president Udupi district Congress, Surab Ballal, president NSUI, Veronica Cornelio, KPCC panellist and senior Congress leader, Congress leader Prasad Raj Kanchan, Harish Kini, Dinesh Puthran, Ganesh Divakar Kundar, and others were present.
