Mangaluru, Nov, 11: “The police officers in the city will hold a drive to make footpaths free for pedestrian usage. Hence, the department will initiate a drive named ‘Footpath for Pedestrians' very shortly," said commissioner of police Anupam Agrawal.

He was speaking to reporters after holding a phone-in programme at his office here on Saturday, November 11.

Earlier during the phone-in session, responding to a caller, the police commissioner ordered officials to initiate action against shrill horns and to declare the residential areas, old age homes, hostels, and school and college zones as 'Silent Zones' free from horns.

During the phone-in programme a caller from Yekkur informed that it is very difficult to cross the road on highways for school children.

Another caller said that private buses are not regular to Kunjathbail. Some urged the police to retain the old system of bus parking in Statebank as students are facing problems.

A caller requested the police to take action against illegal sale of liquor in Attavar.

A senior citizen from Ganjimath informed that footpaths have been encroached by street vendors.

While a few callers informed about parking problems in the city as vehicles are parked on the footpath, some informed about auto-rickshaw drivers charging exorbitant prices while travelling from railways stations.

Responding to the caller, the police commissioner said that the department will initiate proper action.

DCPs were present during the phone-in programme.

I think we should think about how the footpaths have been utilised. We are all tax payers and it’s not wrong in wanting a footpath for us, but we rarely see this. Do you’ll have a proper footpath in the so called smart city as of today? Because I don’t see one. We should protest to remove all the mobile canteens which are being used for their good. When we say “vocal for local”, this doesn’t mean they’ve to be provided with footpath to earn their living. A smart city can have a smart street for Mobile canteeneers to have it there, something like a food street, with proper parking for drive-in facilities, so that others who are paying tax have got a footpath for their good. All these should be strictly followed going further. What if all the footpath will be occupied by these shopless keepers? What will the citizen have a shop earn? He’s also paying tax and rent. There will come a day where all the shop keepers will start so called mobile canteens on the footpath. Also, we see most of the footpath are either broken or used of other purposes like storing sand or cements or stones or these barricades which these cops will leave it there for other purposes. “WE ALL DESERVE A GOOD ROAD, A GOOD FOOTPATH AND BETTER MANGALURU” - Shreyas K R

All the departments like Home, civic authorities, district administration are colluded with all these rogues. Roads are not four laned, but cemented the sides of the road to park the vehicles of affluent. Since the divider is put on the middle, flow of traffic is obstructed. Even though parking place is provided in the basement of the buildings, vehicles are not allowed to enter. There is a new hotel, opened opposite St Ann's Schools near Kuntikan, where there is no foot path and the building touches the road. Cars are parked on the road. One day two police personnel on bike hiding behind the car were catching the helmetless two wheelers. Funny.

Everywhere we can see that most of our footpaths are occupied by street vendors and vehicles and a result the pedestrians are forced to walk/go on roads risking their lives. The main culprit is our Mangalore City Corporation. Giving licences to Tom Dick and Harry also give loans but dont verify where they are doing their business. Even car parki ng places are converted into shops and as a result vehicles are being parking on roads making position still worse. Even in evening times in many places vans, tempos park on roadsides in junctions etc. and wwithout anybodys fear they carry on their business. The Police and the MCC authorities jointly should take action to vacate this illegal business which inconveniences the public. Our footpaths are meant for pedestrians and not for carrying business. In many places though footpaths are there pedestrians walk on roads giving scope for accidents.

Before the Police Commissioner does anything for the betterment of the city he is transfered. This is because of different lobbies in the city.

The slogan should be "FOOTPATH ONLY FOR PEDESTRIANS". What we now see is a lot of obstructions placed on footpaths, making it difficult for pedestrians to walk on them. Just as an example I can point out ywo roads where footpaths are anything but footpaths: the road from Kankanady hospital right up till Mangaladevi Temple. All the footpath is used by hawkers stacking their merchandise or shopkeepers shwcasing their good on the footpaths or the road contractor storing, sand, gravel, stones or bricks on the pavements. The Car Street Maamus treat the footpaths as part of their shops. Add to this some vehicle owners park their cars and other vehicles on the footpaths near their home. This is not a temporary phenomenon. It will continue year after year because the public works and festivals will always be there year after year. As long as the footpaths are not kept cleared, they pedestrians will have no other option but walk on the road on the driving lane.

This is a much needed drive. Footpaths are encroached by cars and scooters at many places. Especially at Chilimbi Reliance supermarket and Skoda showroom. Shameless people drive and park their swanky cars, bikes and scooters on the footpath as if it's their father's property. Footpaths are for pedestrians. Also what happened to the the LadyHill accident which happened recently? Has the accused been thrown to jail yet? No news after his arrest. Most of the influential people get away after using the power of money. The poor victim and their family members will suffer for their entire lifetime!

Footpath in front of bars, hotels, commercial complex and jewelry outlets is used by the people patronizing the above and denying pedestrians from using the footpath. Police give a blind eye to the above problem, nabbing only two wheeler riders riding without helmet.

Footpath also includes "footways" I.e non paved portion. If footpaths are paved they are called "pavements". Footpath paths can be present in cities villages or even forest, according to definition in English. Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Suraj Govindaraj writ petition no: 13736 of 2019 Karnataka High Court (GM-RES-PIL): Petition was filed about parking. Footpath is referred to as footway. Hon High Court had mentioned “it will amount to violation of fundamental rights guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India as held by this Court.”

No use of giving any suggestions, because so for they can't stop shrill horns. MY QUESTION IS WHY CITY BUSES REQUIRE HORN???. When there's block automatically the Traffic Police clear the traffic. Then what's the purpose of blowing horn by the bus drivers??? My suggestion is better ban city buses horn then only the problem will solve. This is my opinion. Our traffic Police department is completely failed to control the city and service buses .
