Laxmi Hebbalkar says Belagavi belonged to Maha before Independence, stirs controversy

Bengaluru, Jan 8 (IANS): Karnataka BJP has demanded resignation of Minister for Women and Child Welfare Laxmi Hebbalkar following her statement that border district Belagavi belonged to Maharashtra before Independence.

Hebbalkar had issued the statement while attending the Sixth Kannada Convention organised at Karadga Village in Belagavi District on Sunday. While describing the rich history of Kannada language and Karnataka state, Hebbalkar had stated that Belagavi was part of Maharashtra before Independence and this stirred up a controversy. Her video in this regard has also gone viral on social media.

BJP MLA SR Vishwanath reacting to the controversial statement demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah shunt Hebbalkar out of the Cabinet.

“Long ago, Belagavi was unified into the state of Karnataka. It is unfortunate that Minister Hebbalkar issued such a statement for vote bank politics. Hebbalkar has insulted 6.5 crore Kannada people. Belagavi belongs to Karnataka and that is why the government organises the Assembly session in Belagavi,” he said.

Former Dy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan stated that Karnataka was ruled by many kingdoms earlier and the state came into existence after unification.

“At this stage, there is no necessity to go backwards. This is a political statement which is not required at this point of time. Belagavi belongs to Karnataka and there should not be any political conspiracy in this regard. The statement by Minister Hebbalkar won’t get support either from Kannada or Maratha people,” he stated.

We Need Tulunadu state which was not a part of Karnataka until 1956. Karnataka Collects humongous tax from Udupi- Mangalore , But this Karnataka suppressed Tulu by imposing Kannada and zero developments. If we have our own state surely we will beat Bangalore. We were ahead of Bangalore with top 5 Banks, News paper Industry, soft drinks and beverages, packaged Food industry, Tile factories, Timber and Plywood, Fishing, and its products, Import& Exports, Shipping, Chemical, Education and Healthcare. But Bangalore was leading only by population and supplying their needs and Govt sponsored public sectors like BEML, BHEL, HMT and ISRO. IT was so biased towards Bangalore. We were very close to Mumbai in terms of trade compared to Bangalore. Until 1995 There were only 2 Govt buses from Udupi to Bangalore whereas to Mumbai there were 40 buses plying. Bangalore was just state capital to us and Karnataka still just a state. We are not actual benefitted by it.

So what? Linguistic based state formation is not perfect. Pune used to have many Kannada medium schools as well as Kannada speaking population. So also, in Chennai. Even today, in many parts of North Bangalore, people speak Telugu at home and in some other parts they speak Tamil. Kasargod, Madhur etc., administratively belonged to Kerala but Kannada was the medium until Kerala started erasing the Kannada trace from there. State formation was made for better administration. Marathi is also a beautiful language just as Kannada. Politicians can make controversy out of thin air and this episode proves it.

the saying UNITY IN DIVERSITY is just a farce..every region and language in india has its own admirers...there is nothing called Indian ness....it seems now the unity is just limited to some cricket matches with pakistan and hoisting of flag and singing the national anthem on Aug 15 (that too is not done in chaddi head quarters of nagpur)

Before independence there was neither Maharashtra nor Karnataka. Belgaum or Belgavi was part of the then Bombay Presidency (not Maharashtra) which also included present Gujarat. States on linguistic basis were formed after the States Reorganisation Act of 1956.

When India became independent in 1947, Belgaum and its district were part of Bombay State. In 1956, the Indian states were reorganised along linguistic lines by the States Reorganisation Act and Belgaum including 10 taluks of Bombay State were transferred to Mysore State, which was renamed Karnataka in 1973. Kasaragod was part of Madras Presidency before 1956, but it was predominantly Kannada and Tulu speaking area. Most of the well Kannada writers hailed from Kasargod and Kumble region. Where is Kasargod now and what happened to Kannada literary excellence coming out of the area
