Mangaluru/Udupi, Mar 13: There has been a significant increase in temperature in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

In Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, Mangaluru and Moodbidri have been designated as areas experiencing normal heat levels. However, the shift in climate resulting from increased temperatures has impacted various animals and birds, particularly productive livestock like cattle and poultry.

Against this backdrop, the department of animal husbandry has issued advisory measures, particularly emphasizing breeding cattle and veterinary services. During the summer season, the elevated temperatures cause stress among animals, leading to decreased food intake, reduced milk yield, and a heightened risk of death due to heat exhaustion. Meat chickens also experience a notable decline in food consumption, potentially resulting in weight loss. Moreover, when temperatures exceed 36 degrees Celsius, chickens may succumb to heat-related fatalities. Additionally, under conditions of temperature stress, animals and birds exhibit reduced disease resistance, with chickens particularly susceptible to respiratory ailments.

During the scorching summer months, it is imperative to implement several measures to ensure the well-being of animals. Grazing should be restricted to the cooler hours of the day, preferably in the morning or evening, with animals sheltered from 11 am to 4 pm. A continuous supply of clean, cool water must be available round the clock, and arrangements should be made through local institutions in case of water scarcity. Grazing areas should be shaded, and shed roofs can be sprinkled with water or painted light colours to mitigate heat. Installing fans inside sheds can further reduce temperatures, while shade nets or coconut leaves can provide additional protection. Regularly spraying animals with water helps to cool them down, and feeding should be increased in the mornings and late evenings. Supplementing their feed with salt according to their needs is essential, and immediate veterinary attention should be sought in case of any health issues such as unconsciousness or reduced milk yield. These proactive measures are crucial for ensuring the welfare of animals during the hot summer season.

Ensuring the welfare of poultry during the summer months requires meticulous attention to several key factors. Firstly, a constant supply of clean, fresh water must be provided throughout the day, as even a brief shortage of water can prove fatal to poultry. Adequate ventilation is essential, necessitating the removal of all barriers to promote airflow within the poultry shed. Coconut leaves can be employed to shade the shed, or sprinklers installed for cooling purposes. Interior fans should also be installed to further enhance ventilation. To combat heat stress, supplements such as vitamin C and electrolytes can be added to their water, or a mixture of soda with water can be provided for drinking. Additionally, painting the outer surface of water tanks white or providing shade around the shed can help maintain cooler temperatures. Regular cleaning of water tanks is imperative to prevent the proliferation of harmful microorganisms. Measures should also be taken to prevent heatstroke, including providing ample shade and ventilation. During the hottest part of the day, from 1 pm to 5 pm, poultry should be sprayed with water to help alleviate the effects of high temperatures and humidity. Finally, it's crucial to extend these considerations beyond poultry, ensuring all animals and birds have access to clean water in their surroundings to uphold their well-being and humane treatment.

Domesticated animals will somehow be protected by their owners, but what about wild animals; they have already started moving around desperately in hitherto unknown areas like towns and mini cities.. frantically searching for drinking water 😔
