Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (VP)

Mangaluru, Mar 14: In a brief discussion regarding heat waves, Dr Naveen Chandra Kulal, the nodal officer for the climate control programme, stated, "There are various types of heat waves, including heat edema, heat tetanic, heat syncope, and ultimately, heat stroke, which can be fatal. These conditions are commonly found in children and senior citizens."

He advised, "Children and senior citizens should avoid sun exposure during peak hours. It is important to maintain hydration by increasing fluid intake, such as water and juices, to cool the body. Carbonated drinks should be avoided, and instead, beverages like buttermilk, lemonade, and other healthy options should be consumed. During the summer season, it's advisable to wear light-coloured cotton clothing to stay cool."

When asked about raising awareness of heat strokes among children, Dr Kulal mentioned, "The government has issued a notification to all schools instructing them to educate children about heat strokes."

He further added, "We are all aware that summers bring heat waves, which is why children receive summer holidays to stay at home and avoid heat stroke. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and individuals should drink boiled water to prevent health problems due to water shortages. Additionally, reducing intake of sugar and spicy foods is advisable."

Dr Kulal also noted, "We have instructed construction sites to implement precautionary measures, including providing tents with sheets, especially if there are small children present."
