Young Chess prodigy Aaron Mendes shines bright at 2024 FIDE candidates

Media Release

Mangaluru, Apr 16: In a historic moment for chess enthusiasts worldwide, 11-year-old Aaron Reeve Mendes, recognised as a chess prodigy from Mangaluru, was honoured with a prestigious invitation to attend the 2024 FIDE Candidates event in Toronto. Aaron not only had the privilege of rubbing shoulders with the chess elite but also had the honour of making the first move in round 9 on Board one, on Sunday, April 14.

Accompanied by Dana Reizniece-Ozola, the deputy chair of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Aaron represented not just his exceptional talent but also the pride of our community at the Candidates' event. This special invitation underscores Aaron's incredible skills and bright future in competitive chess.

Aaron extended his heartfelt thanks to Salim Belcadi, Board Chair of Annex Chess Club, and Christina Tao of the Canadian Chess Federation for recognising his talent and providing him with this opportunity.

The journey to this momentous occasion was paved with dedication, hard work, and remarkable achievements. Just days before his notable appearance at the FIDE candidates event, Aaron Mendes secured a significant victory at the III Open International Chess Menorca BLITZ, held on April 4, 2024, in Spain. Despite competing against seasoned Grandmasters (GMs) and International Masters (IMs), Aaron showcased unparalleled skill and strategic acumen, securing a remarkable 8 out of 9 wins in the blitz tournament.

Aaron's triumph at the III Open International Chess Menorca BLITZ not only captured the attention of the chess world but also solidified his status as a rising star in competitive chess. His remarkable performance rating of 2621 led to a surge in his blitz live ratings, reaching 2385, the highest for any under 12-year-old globally.

The recognition bestowed upon him at the 2024 FIDE candidates event, coupled with his recent victory at the III Open International Chess Menorca BLITZ, serves as a testament to his extraordinary talent and boundless potential.

Aaron seized a remarkable opportunity to join the exclusive FIDE Chessable training, gathering 12 of the most talented U16 chess players, held in Spain from March 28 to April 1. Guided by the expertise of revered Grandmasters Judith Polgar and Arthur Jussupow, Aaron embarked on an intensive journey of skill refinement and strategic enhancement, diligently preparing himself to tackle the rigors of high-stakes competition.

The presence of Chessable CEO Geert Van der Velde added a layer of depth and wisdom to the camp experience. Meeting & sharing chess experience with FIDE Deputy Chair WGM Dana was a privilege at the camp.

Reflecting on his humble beginnings and early training at Derik Chess School and Mount Carmel Central School in Mangaluru, Aaron expresses gratitude for the solid foundation that paved the way for his international success. Now studying at St. Barbara Catholic Elementary School, he is grateful to principal Olivera Glasford for their unwavering support.

The global chess community eagerly awaits the continued success and accomplishments of Aaron Reeve Mendes as he embarks on his journey to make a lasting impact on competitive chess worldwide.
