With onset of monsoon, CM-DCM go round Bengaluru city to inspect preparedness, work progress

Bengaluru, May 22: With the onset of monsoon and the heavy rains during the last few days causing problems in some parts of the city, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar took a round of inspection in different wards and also the review the progress of various ongoing works.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath and other senior civic officials accompanied the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, who incidentally is the Bengaluru in charge, to explain the status.

The first stop of the City Rounds Bus was at Gali Anjaneyaswamy Temple, which had experienced heavy flooding last year due to the overflowing the drainage canal known as Rajakaluve.

BBMP Chief Commissioner explained that a parallel canal was being proposed to solve the problem. The work was estimated to cost Rs 11.5 crore.

The Chief Minister directed that the work should be expedited and also steps should be taken to prevent local people from throwing garbage and debris in the existing drainage canal as it leads to clogging and flooding.

In the Nayandahalli ward of Vijayanagar assembly constituency, the Chief Minister was informed that the construction of a fly-over had led to flooding in the Rajakaluve as the flyover has reduced the width.

An additional drainage canal at a cost of Rs 7 crore had been proposed, which is awaiting approvals from the Finance and Revenue Departments. The officials were asked to get early approvals and take up the work to prevent the flooding this year.

At the next stop in BTM Layout, the visiting party inspected the BTM Metro Station and the double-decker two-tier system for flyover and metro lines of about two kms was suggested.

The Chief Minister directed that the double decker model should be taken up to ease traffic congestion.

In Bommanahalli assembly constituency, the Chief Minister directed that a jackwell to regulate the overflow from the Rajakaluve and also pump out the water into the neighbouring Madiwala lake at a cost of Rs 4.3 crore.

The Chief Minister took the officials to task for not removing the dry trees in the Banashankari 2nd stage in the 100 ft road and warned the officials for laxity. “Do you want disasters to happen?” he asked the officials.

He also directed the officials to set right and repair the damaged footpaths and fill up the potholes in Padmanabhanagar area.
