Udupi, May 28: Forensic science plays an important role in providing justice in criminal acts, said Prof Dr Vinod Naik, Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Kasturba Medical college Manipal .

He was speaking at a seminar and dialogue programme on 'Importance of Forensic and DNA Tests in Crimes' held on Tuesday, May 28, at Udupi Press Club under the auspices of Udupi District Working Journalists Association in collaboration with Udupi Press Club Committee.

“In every crime case, every criminal leaves one or the other clue at the scene. It has to be found properly. We have less number of forensic experts. Some districts do not have forensic experts at all. So it becomes quite difficult to collect evidence at crime scenes. For that crime scene officers are now appointed in police departments. Trained in forensic science and collects the evidence found at the crime scene and hands it over to the forensic experts” he added.

Assistant professor Dr Shankar M B said forensics is not just post-mortem. "The work starts from the crime scene and continues until the accused is punished. By properly identifying the traces found at crime scenes, collecting them and further examining them, it is possible to find out who committed the crime and how it was done through forensic science," he added.

Association president Rajesh Shetty Alevoor presided. Union State Committee member Kiran Manjanbailu, district general secretary Nazeer Polya, and Press Club Committee convenor Ajith Aradi were present.

Raheem Ujire, secretary of the association, welcomed. Treasurer Umesh Marpalli offered the vote of thanks. Chetan Matpadi narrated the program.
