Udupi, Jun 20: A meeting was convened in Bengaluru under the chairmanship of Fisheries Minister Dr Mankal S Vaidya to discuss the challenges and demands faced by coastal fishermen. Led by Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, office-bearers of the Karnataka Coastal Fishermen's Action Committee met with the minister to present several requests.
Key demands included the development of road and infrastructure at fishing ports statewide. The committee also advocated for an amendment to the 1984 Fisheries Act regulations to better align with current needs. They emphasised the importance of local fishermen associations in the effective management of ports.
Among other requests were an increase in the daily diesel quota to 500 litres, interest-free loans for women fishermen, and leasing of fish drying facilities at concessional rates for at least 15 years. Simplification of rules governing fishing boat insurance and life insurance for fishermen was also discussed.
The meeting deliberated on urgent issues such as the prompt approval of compensation and the implementation of projects like the outer harbour project at Malpe fishing port, and the dredging and development of various ports.
Key figures present included fisheries department director Dinesh Kaller, president of the Malpe Fishermen Association Dayananda Suvarna, and representatives from the Karnataka Coastal Fishermen Action Committee.
The gathering aimed to address these critical concerns swiftly, aiming to enhance support and infrastructure for Karnataka's coastal fishing communities.
