Udupi, Jul 9: KPCC spokesperson Veronica Cornelio has urged the government to have the police file a suo moto case against Suratkal MLA Bharat Shetty and arrest him for his statement that "Rahul Gandhi is barking and should be slapped twice inside the Parliament with the doors locked."
She criticized Bharat Shetty for making such statements in public meetings to garner applause instead of acting as a role model for society. Cornelio stated that it has become a habit for BJP leaders to make irresponsible remarks, which should be taken seriously by the government. She pointed out that BJP had previously created a commotion when Rahul Gandhi mentioned Modi's name in a meeting, leading to the cancellation of his parliamentary membership. Now, their derogatory comments about Rahul Gandhi are condemnable.
Veronica Cornelio emphasized that the entire nation has accepted Rahul Gandhi, who contested and won from two constituencies in the recent Lok Sabha elections by significant margins, and now serves as the Leader of the Opposition. She asserted that the position of the opposition is as important as the position of the Prime Minister, and Bharat Shetty’s derogatory language towards such a leader reveals his true nature.
She criticized Bharat Shetty for riding on the Hindutva label without any notable achievements in his constituency. She stated that Bharat Shetty needs to first understand the true essence of Hinduism, which is not about the culture of violence he seems to propagate. She defended Rahul Gandhi's parliamentary speech, stating that he spoke extensively about the true values of Hinduism without disrespecting the religion. She accused BJP of making baseless allegations against Rahul Gandhi to satisfy their own agenda.
Cornelio challenged Bharat Shetty to show if he has the strength to touch even a hair on the head of a Congress party worker, let alone Rahul Gandhi. She remarked that if the Congress had made such low remarks, the BJP would have created a ruckus in the entire district. However, she emphasized that the Congress believes in respecting the law and does not resort to hooliganism.
She demanded strict action from the government against MLA Bharat Shetty for his absurd remarks about Rahul Gandhi, suggesting that such measures will make others think a thousand times before speaking irresponsibly. This demand was made in her press release.
