Udupi, Jul 17: With the widespread increase in cases of dengue and other infectious diseases in the district, there is a significant concern about patients going on self-medication. This practice can result in the improper diagnosis of diseases and inadequate treatment, potentially leading to fatal outcomes.

As a precautionary measure, the district's assistant drug controller has announced that all pharmacies in the district must not sell paracetamol and other antibiotic medicines without a doctor's prescription. This measure is aimed at ensuring that patients receive appropriate medical care.

Additionally, the district's blood banks have been instructed to take adequate measures to prevent any shortage of blood and blood products. They are advised to prepare a list of blood donors and maintain a sufficient stock of blood according to the needs.

The assistant drug controller of Udupi issued this information in a press release.

Dengue many a times may mimic symptoms of many other illnesses; high fever, malaise, weakness, stiff neck warrants immediate blood work investigations to rule out dengue! BTW; came across a very typical case of a patient having high fever for 5+days with severe bodyache, ultimately scanty urination; was rushed to a hospital in Thumbay, was diagnosed with dengue and treatment protocol started; however in two days he required dialysis due to kidney malfunction; another team of doctors in the city ultimately diagnosed it as a case of smoldering MM; after a series of chemotherapy sessions he is in remission; advised to consider autologous stem cell transplantation before it relapses again!!

Banning OTC paracetamol, a time tested & safe analgesic antipyretic, is nonsensical just because dengue is around! Any high fever with aches and pains and malaise for more than two days needs medical assessment ! BTW one 👀 brand 650 of the same salt minted billions by selling their prep during Kovida jhumla!!🤠😜

Very foolish decision. In Dengue and many viral infections ( mostly self-limiting) the main symptoms are fever and body ache, here paracetamol is the most time-tested and safe ( in proper dose and time duration) medicine for symptomatic relief.

Doctor's lobby is working very hard. Imagine if a patient goes to a doctor for fever. Doctor's fees + some blood test costs+ additional costs for treatment for some minor deficiencies on the report+ costs for antibiotics which doctor will prescribe anyway + costs of some costly paracetamol brand which the doctor prescribes. Instead of 1 Rs OTC paracetamol tablet, he spends about 1500.00 rs. Any investigation is recommended on this senseless order!

This is such an irresponsible and useless advisory for a commonly available drug which does not need a doctor’s prescription . Private healthcare lobby must be behind this .
