Mangaluru: Incessant rains – Landslide threat at 83 locations in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, Jul 19: Dakshina Kannada has been experiencing heavy rains for several days, prompting the IMD to issue a red alert. Amidst these heavy rains, 83 potential landslide sites have been identified to prevent mishaps.

The information, gathered via satellite, reveals that out of the 83 spots, 11 are extremely precarious, posing a significant risk of fatalities if landslides occur.

A survey by the Indian Geological Department attributes the increase in landslides to unscientific hill cutting for house construction and road extensions, soil erosion, and slopes created by small water streams.

Beltangady taluk has the highest number of dangerous areas, with 35 spots identified as landslide-prone. Four spots on Charmadi Ghat are considered very dangerous, 16 spots have a moderate risk, and 13 spots have a low risk. The steep downward slopes in these areas increase the likelihood of landslides.

In Bantwal, landslides are likely in B. Kasaba, Amtadi, Maninalkooru, Perne, Sajipamunnooru, Pudu, Sajipanadu, and Kariyangala villages due to hill cutting. Puttur’s Kaukradi and Ichlamapady also face potential mudslides due to unscientific road extension work and rampant hill cutting.

Summer soil removal and environmental damage have increased landslide risks in Sampaje, Arantodu, Todikana, Aletti, Markanja, Harihara Pallatadka, Balugodu, Kollamogru, and Kalmakaru of Sullia taluk.

Extensive building construction and artificial pressure on the earth have heightened landslide risks in Addoor, Muloor, Adyar, Arkula, Kenjaru, Soorinje, and Delantabettu in Mangaluru taluk.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Mugilan stated that dangerous landslide-prone areas have been identified and necessary precautions have been instructed to concerned officials. A report will be sent to the government to implement permanent remedial measures in these areas.

I appreciate our DC timely steps taken in locating the dangerous areas. Work should be given to reputed companies with guarantee work before next rainy season.
