Udupi, Jul 21: District in-charge minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar visited flood-affected areas and regions impacted by sea erosion, instilling confidence among the victims and speaking to the media.

Lakshmi Hebbalkar stated, “I will visit various areas until the evening of Sunday and provide compensation to the affected people.”

In response to a query about not visiting Udupi despite the floods, the minister said, “I am ready to construct a house and stay in Udupi, but I have many responsibilities. The Assembly session is in progress. Although Sunday is a holiday, I have come to visit the district. Whenever the necessity arises, I will come to Udupi. The government and district administration are alert. We have taken precautions to prevent loss of lives.

“Twenty-five days ago, a district-level meeting was held. Instructions were given to the forest department. More than 500 to 600 trees have been cut. Mescom was instructed prior to the meeting to remove wires near the schools. In Udupi city, blocked drains have been cleaned. The administration has taken care to avoid any issues due to foot bridges. A helpline has been established by the district administration.”

Regarding the query about not releasing the Rs 5 crore grant meant for sea erosion, Lakshmi replied, “A proposal has been sent to clear the old dues. Rs 5 crore in urgent relief has been requested. It will be released soon.”

On the topic of discrimination in compensation, the minister said, “There is some confusion regarding the compensation amount for rain damage. Last year, we gave Rs 5 lac for houses that were completely destroyed. This year, no clarity is available so far. I will not create any chaos. How many days have passed since the monsoon arrived? I will get clarification on this matter at the government level and inform you. We are capable of answering the BJP. Siddaramaiah is an able leader, and BJP leaders are frustrated, so they keep saying anything.”

Regarding the letter from Kota Srinivasa Poojary, Hebbalkar said, “You have to get an answer to this query from the CM himself. He has quoted the name of MP Kota Srinivasa Poojary. Siddaramaiah is not the kind of person who gives statements for political mileage. He is holding a responsible position. He has presented the budget 15 times. He will not accuse someone for political reasons. He accuses only when he has genuine proof. He will give the right answer.

The minister was accompanied by Udupi deputy commissioner Dr Vidya Kumari and other officials concerned.
