Mangaluru, Jul 27: Microchips have been inserted into King Cobras at Pilikula Biological Park.
Since snakes of the same species look alike, it is challenging to differentiate them. As Pilikula serves as a reproduction and conservation center for King Cobras, it is necessary to identify the snakes individually. This is why the microchips have been inserted.
The microchips are implanted under the snakes' skin and can be read using a sensing reader. According to Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the park, the microchips do not have any adverse effects on the snakes.
Bhandary stated, “It is difficult to identify reptiles externally as male or female. To identify them scientifically, we use detection equipment. This method allows us to accurately measure their weight, length, and other parameters.
"Microchips are also being inserted into tigers, lions, and leopards at the biological park. The process of identifying the gender of hyenas, wolves, forest dogs, bears, and Nile crocodiles is underway at the park,” he said.
