Mangaluru, Jul 27: Five crows, two eagles, and another bird (known locally as Kupulu) were found dead near the mobile tower at the junction of Naringana village in Ullal taluk.
The mobile tower, recently erected despite opposition from local residents, is situated near the site where the birds were discovered.
Local residents had voiced concerns about the potential harm from the tower, but officials from the mobile company assured the grama panchayat that the structure would not damage nearby coconut trees or affect birds resting on them. The panchayat approved the tower’s construction based on these assurances. Now, there is suspicion that the tower may have contributed to the birds' deaths.
There is also a recent incident where street dogs chased a boy at Taudugoli, prompting local auto drivers to intervene. It is suspected that the drivers may have used poison to deal with the dogs, which the birds might have ingested.
A crow was found dead on the steps of the mobile tower's transformer, with another carcass nearby. Asha workers, health department officials, grama panchayat PDO, and local leaders have visited the site and have made a verbal complaint to the gram panchayat.
Nawaz Naringana, president of the Panchayat, stated, “Arrangements are being made to send the carcasses of the dead birds to the forensic laboratory to determine the exact cause of death. Depending on the results from the forensic lab, appropriate action will be taken against those responsible. One eagle carcass is currently kept on a gunny bag at the bus stand near the junction.”
