Kundapur, Aug 4: In a shocking incident, a man assaulted his wife with a sickle at Basrur under the Kandloor police station limits on Saturday night. The wife, seriously injured, has been admitted to the hospital.
Anita (38), a native of Soraba, is the victim. Her husband, Laxmana (40), is the accused. Both were working on the farm of Kashi Math at Basrur.
The couple was living in a rented house at a residential block belonging to Basrur Kashi Math, where they tended to the farm. They had left their child in Soraba and moved to Basrur for work four months ago.
Around 6:45 pm on Saturday, a verbal altercation broke out between the couple. Laxmana, who was inebriated, attacked his wife with a sickle, inflicting serious injuries on her neck. Anita collapsed in a pool of blood in the kitchen. Locals saw Laxmana brandishing the sickle in the hall of his house after locking the door from inside.
For over an hour and a half, locals tried to rescue Anita, but Laxmana prevented anyone from entering the house, threatening them with the sickle. Eventually, the public managed to distract Laxmana, broke a window, entered the kitchen, and rushed Anita to Manipal Hospital.
When the police arrived, Laxmana was still wielding the sickle erratically. Despite the use of tear gas by the police and fire service personnel, Laxmana continued his violent behavior. Finally, around 10 pm, autorickshaw driver Kerekatte Ashok, Sachin, and others managed to enter the house through the back door and subdued Laxmana.
Kandloor police are investigating the incident further.
