Mangaluru: Speed limits imposed on national highways due to heavy rains

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 7: Continuous heavy rains have caused damage to certain sections of the national highways in the coastal Karnataka region, leading to speed restrictions on these roads.

For the safety of commuters, speed limits have been imposed on national highway (NH) 66 from Surathkal to Thokkottu junction and on NH-73 from BC Road to Nanthoor junction.

The speed limit has been set at 40 km/h for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and heavy vehicles. Due to the ongoing rain, highway users are advised to drive at a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

This advisory comes from the project director and highway maintenance officials of the National Highways Authority of India's project implementation unit.

First repair the roads, specially highways which are badly damaged. With present condition of the High Ways, speed is not an issue, but safety of the vehicles & passengers is priority. Accidents happen with bad roads, pot holes and un-scientific road laying with other safety measures being ignored.

No matter how much you enforce speed limits, just look at the speed of the buses from Mangalore to Udupi, Kundapur, Karkal, and Moodbidri. None of them follow traffic rules, and anyone caught in between is risking their life.

Setting new speed limits on the highway is a joke and this was not necessary. The roads are in such a bad condition, it doesn't seem like a toll road at all. The pathetic condition of the road doesn't allow anyone to go that fast, except of course our buses.
