Bantwal, Aug 28: The Jewels Group, in association with the parish council, health commission, youth commission and Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of Our Lady of Loretto Church, and Father Muller Medical College Hospital, the Indian Cancer Society, Mangaluru, and the Indian Red Cross organized a free cancer awareness and screening and blood donation camp, on August 25, at the Loretto CBSE English Medium School, Loretto, Bantwal. This was the 11th such camp to have been organized by Jewels, in and around Mangaluru, in the past two years.
With the attendance of hundreds of participants and 197 screenings, of which 125 females, the camp was a huge success towards Jewels' goal of spreading cancer awareness, and also providing free screening and follow-up of the suspected cases of the deadly disease.
Presiding over the programme, Fr Francis Crasta, parish priest, Loretto, in his message, commended the organizers for organizing such programmes with the goal of building a healthy life style and a healthy society and wished them the best.
Chief guests Dr Rohan Chandra Gatti, associate professor and head of department surgical oncology at Father Muller Medical College Hospital and Dr Dinesh Shet, associate professor medical oncology, Father Muller Medical College Hospital, gave a presentation about the various aspects about cancer and explained the screening procedures.
Oliveera Quadros, member, Jewels Group, delivering her message, explained her association's goal and its various activities in spreading cancer awareness and assisting patients in their hour of need.
Cyprian D'Souza, vice president of the Parish Council, Shaila Barboza, secretary, Prakash, coordinator, Snehal, ICYM president, Tina Fernandes, Jewel Group and Praveen Kumar, Indian Red Cross were present on the dais.
Praveen Pinto welcomed the gathering, Alwyn Pinto presented the programme and Reema Frank proposed the vote of thanks.
Since its founding in December 2017, the Jewels Group has organized 11 free cancer awareness and screening camps and also, through the donations of its members, has contributed approximately Rs 73 lac towards the treatment, medical and hospital bills, of more than 160 less fortunate patients, by direct transfers to the respective hospital accounts.
