Mangaluru, Aug 16: The Vriddhi Industry Academia Collaboration, NUINS, Oncology department, JKSHCH sponsored by INTAS Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Mangaluru organised a workshop on ‘Empowering Nurses for Oncology Care’ on September 10 at Avishkar Hall, 7th Floor, A B Shetty Dental College, Mangaluru.

The organising secretary, Prof Dr Jacintha Veigas, welcomed the gathering. Usman Bhasha D, senior business manager was the chief guest and Prof A N Parameshwaran, director, IIC Nitte (DU), was the guest of honour.

Along with the dignitaries, Prof Dr Sabitha Nayak, vice-principal NUINS, resource persons Dr Vijith Shetty, Prof Sujatha R, Dr Latha S, Prof Dr Gayathri Bhat, Dr Krishna Sharan and representatives from the participants joined in lighting the lamp and inaugurated the event.

Various topics such as care givers in oncology, biomedical waste management, biosafety & biosafety cabinet, the central venous access catheter, central line care & management, introduction to oncology and handling complications during radiation and chemotherapy, management of chemotherapy induced nausea & vomiting, management of neutropenia and infection, monoclonal antibodies, safe administration and preparation of cancer chemotherapy & safe handling of the cytotoxic drug were discussed. A total of 202 participants were the beneficiaries.

The participants were actively engaged throughout by using various methods of teaching such as lecture cum discussion, video presentation and demonstration. Prof Sujatha R thanked the resource persons and the participants at the end of the programme.
