Bantwal, Oct 12: The school development committee of Devasyamooduru Government Higher Primary School, along with its alumni and others, have donned Navaratri costumes to save the school from closure.
Led by Vasanta Mudimara, president of the school development committee, a group of two committee members and former students dressed in lion costumes are going around the village to collect funds.
The costume campaign was flagged off on October 3, the first day of Navaratri, at the school campus. Head teacher Harinakshi, school development committee member Pramila, Melpathara Higher Primary School head teacher Seetharama K, and others were present.
The Devasyamooduru Government School, established in 1955, has completed 70 years. Although the school has 1.2 acres of land, it faces many challenges. Numerous schools in Karnataka have shut down due to poor infrastructure and declining student numbers, leading to concerns among the school development committee and villagers that this school might face the same fate.
The school building is in a dilapidated condition, lacks a compound wall, and is missing essential equipment. The school currently has 84 students, and the committee believes that improving the infrastructure is crucial for increasing enrollment.
The school development committee asserts that rather than relying on the government and local representatives, it is better for the villagers to unite and save the school. The committee and former students are seeking donations from the public. Despite being a daily wage laborer, SDMC president Vasanta Mudimara has shown great dedication by wearing the Navaratri costume to secure the future of the village’s children.
"We are donning lion costumes for five days because we see it as our duty to save this temple of education for the rural community," said Vasanta Mudimara. "Yashwant Kandrodi, president of the former students’ association, Harish Naika, school development committee member, and other senior students are supporting this effort."
