Udupi: Encroachment of footpaths causes parking issues everywhere

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Nov 12: The encroachment of footpaths in the city has forced pedestrians to walk on the roads, leading to an unavoidable situation.

In some places, shops have taken over the footpaths, while in others, vendors conduct their businesses directly on the sidewalks. Many footpaths are uneven and filled with potholes, posing a risk of pedestrians falling into them. This scenario is particularly evident from Kinnimulki to the service bus stop in the city.

Large iron pipes and other materials have been stored on the pedestrian path near the old Diana Circle, causing daily inconvenience to both pedestrians and motorists. These materials are reportedly for the construction of signal poles. They have been stored there for the past two years, contributing to traffic accidents. Due to these pipes occupying the pedestrian pathway, pedestrians are compelled to walk on the main road. Locals have urged the city and district administration to promptly remove these iron materials through the concerned authorities.

During festivals, the sale of flowers on the footpaths in front of the city council results in traffic congestion. Additionally, motorists trying to navigate the area struggle, creating a chaotic scene. Passengers are often seen boarding and alighting buses in the middle of the road. Despite the installation of no-parking signs and various traffic signals, parking occurs indiscriminately, causing challenges for both pedestrians and motorists. There is a demand for the city administration to designate a separate area for flower vendors during such times.

"If street vending on footpaths is observed in various parts of the city, fines will be imposed, and immediate steps will be taken for removal. Instructions will also be given to the concerned parties for clearing the signal pole materials," Dr Uday Shetty, acting commissioner, city council said.

Dear Dr.Uday Shetty, I am so glad Daijiworld has put up an article on the lack of action by the Udupi Municipality that pays a blind eye to any and every type of activity in Udupi and on the pavements, from out of town flower vendors to even to prostitution under a holy tree at the City Bus Stand that was recently raided by Police, but still continues! Look at the amount of large water pipes and interlock tiles laying on the footpaths to the left side of the main Udupi Malpe road after Modern Stores, Udupi. Look at the huge Traffic Light Structures stored on the main road at the bend at the old Diana Restaurant! These Suppliers or Contractors, and the ordering Party or Authority should be heavily penalised to cause inconvenience to pavement users and traffic in general. There is no clear LAW put up on large boards informing all these outside vendors in Kannada, Hindi, and English on Violation & Penalties for vending on Pavements, Parking on Pavements, Sleeping on Pavements, etc. Even today, as I write, I am certain there will be no action taken by the Udupi Municipality. They need a written complaint and even after that they do not take any action. I have proof of that on a complaint that I registered against a Bhel Puri Rajasthani vendor who is vending every evening at the side of Manjunath Eye Hospital, directly blocking the walking path of the people. As a Senior Citizen of Udupi, I cannot understand, why the staff of Authorities do not function as expected, and what are Udupi Municipality's responsibilities. Why cant we together make Udupi a beautiful model Town? Why have we to highlight in the media of the non functionality of our Udupi Municipality, to whom we are paying taxes every year! Its just like throwing water over a Ducks's back!
