Vatican City (Rome), Dec 1: Pope Francis stated that the teachings of Brahma Shree Narayana Guru are highly relevant in today's world. Recognizing Guru as one of the foremost saints who upheld the idea that all humans belong to one family, the Pope highlighted that Narayana Guru dedicated his life to the upliftment of society.
Speaking at an interfaith gathering organized at the Shivagiri Math in Vatican City, Pope Francis remembered Brahma Shree Narayana Guru in his blessings. He remarked that Guru’s teachings hold immense significance in an era marked by growing intolerance and hatred between nations and individuals. The interfaith conference, held earlier today (November 30) in Vatican City, saw the participation of representatives from over 15 countries, including Italy, Ireland, the UAE, Bahrain, Indonesia, England, and the United States.
Born in 1856 in Chembalanthi, a small village in Thiruvananthapuram, Narayana Guru hailed from a lower-middle-class Ezhava family. He was the fourth son of Madan Asan and Kuttiyamma of the Vayalvaram house. His father, an expert in astrology and Ayurvedic medicine, was also a teacher, earning the title "Asan" (Guru).
In his childhood, Narayana Guru was affectionately called "Nanu." He studied sacred texts like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata under the guidance of Krishna Vaidhyar and Raman Vaidhyar. He also learned traditional medicine and became proficient in the practice. Acquiring knowledge of Sanskrit, Tamil, and Malayalam, he furthered his studies under Raman Pillai Asan in Varanappally, gaining great expertise. His leadership qualities earned him the title of "Chattambi" (leader) among fellow students. Later, he took up teaching and became popularly known as "Nanu Asan."
After the death of his parents, Narayana Guru leaned more towards spiritual contemplation. Alongside his teaching profession, he deeply studied and reflected on texts like the Vedas, Upanishads, the Quran, and the Bible, which enriched his spiritual understanding. After receiving spiritual initiation, Narayana Guru became closely associated with people, connecting with them on equal terms and addressing the health concerns of the marginalized communities in his region.
Brahma Shree Narayana Guru was involved in several reform movements. He led the "Vaikom Satyagraha," advocating for the right of the lower castes to walk freely on public roads. He also raised awareness against extravagance, superstitions, animal sacrifices, alcoholism, women's oppression, and the importance of education.
His life and teachings remain a beacon of hope and a guide for a harmonious society.
