Chennai, Dec 17 (IANS): The Tamil Nadu government should act against activists trying to hold up work on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) being set up in the state, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy said Saturday.

Speaking to reporters here, he said: "The Tamil Nadu government has lodged cases against more than 150 people, including leaders, for (holding) anti-KNPP agitation without requisite permission."

He said the central government had issued notices to some non-governmental organisations (NGO) in Tuticorin asking them to explain their source of funds and their expenses.

Narayanasamy charged the protesters with resorting to delaying tactics by asking for irrelevant information.

He said the expert committee formed by the central government has explained in detail the safety aspects while the agitators were asking additional information like the agreement between India and Russia and other matters.

India's atomic power plant operator Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) is building two 1,000 MW atomic power reactors at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district, around 650 km from here at an outlay of Rs.13,171 crore.

The first unit was slated to be commissioned in December. However, villagers, citing fears for their lives and safety concerns, started their agitation in August and brought all the project related work to a standstill.
