Mangaluru/Udupi, Dec 31: With scores of tourists flocking to the twin districts to ring in the New Year, traffic jams are being reported across major routes. Police have been deployed in large numbers to manage traffic and maintain law and order.
The Mangaluru-Bengaluru and Mangaluru-Goa highways are witnessing heavy traffic congestion due to the influx of vehicles. Starting from the afternoon of December 31, additional security measures and checks are being carried out in Mangaluru. Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), City Armed Reserve (CAR), and senior police officials have been stationed at key points in the city. Special checks are being conducted at additional checkpoints to ensure public safety.

Police are actively working to prevent incidents such as drunken driving, drug consumption, and reckless behavior like wheeling and overspeeding. City police commissioner Anupam Agarwal emphasized that anti-social activities will not be tolerated and urged the public to celebrate the New Year responsibly, within the limits of the law.
Yathish N, superintendent of police, Dakshina Kannada, stated, “Legal action will be taken against anyone violating the law. All programs must have prior approval, and additional security will be in place to avoid untoward incidents.”
Dr Arun K, superintendent of police, Udupi, urged the public to follow the administration’s guidelines to ensure a safe celebration. He warned that strict action will be taken against any lawbreakers.
Commissioner Agarwal also clarified that New Year programs in Mangaluru must conclude by midnight, and no permissions will be granted beyond this time. Loudspeakers and public address systems must adhere to prescribed noise limits, and obscene dances or activities are strictly prohibited.
In Udupi, Dr Arun K noted that celebrations should wrap up by 12.30 am, with loudspeakers allowed only until 10 pm. He advised the public to call the helpline number 112 in case of emergencies.
Hotels, lodges, and resorts in the twin districts are packed to capacity for the New Year celebrations. Popular destinations such as Udupi, Malpe, Maravanthe, Kodi Beach, Kaup Beach, and the Lighthouse saw full bookings as early as November.
