Kasargod, Jan 5: The demand for sweet potato (Genasu in Kannada) has been steadily rising, especially among gym-goers who are opting for it as a healthier and more affordable alternative to costly protein powders. Currently, priced at Rs 60 a kilo, sweet potato has become a popular choice among the health-conscious.
Just three months ago, the price of sweet potato was Rs 120 a kilo. Over the past few years, its popularity has grown, particularly among the younger, fitness-oriented generation. It is also becoming increasingly popular among diabetics due to its health benefits.

In Kerala, many shops are selling more than 50 kilos of sweet potato daily, highlighting the surge in demand. While sweet potato was once a regular part of the local diet, its popularity had declined over time, leading many farmers to stop cultivating it. However, the recent rise in demand has prompted farmers to resume production.
Sweet potato can be cultivated year-round, either in yards or paddy fields, with a short harvest time of just three months. It requires little maintenance, although wild boars, who are fond of the vegetable, pose a challenge to farmers.
With its growing popularity and ease of cultivation, sweet potato is becoming a favoured food choice, not only for its health benefits but also as a convenient and affordable snack option.
