New Delhi, Feb 22: A plant-rich, low-saturated fat diet—including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy—may help reduce the severity of psoriasis, according to a recent study.
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that leads to flaky, scaly patches, affecting millions worldwide. The disease is linked to immune system dysfunction and often worsens due to lifestyle factors, including diet.
The study, published in the British journal of nutrition, revealed that higher consumption of red and processed meats was linked to more severe psoriasis symptoms. In contrast, diets rich in plant-based foods and low in saturated fats showed a significant reduction in disease severity.
"Our findings highlight the potential benefits of dietary interventions in improving psoriasis outcomes," said Sylvia Zanesco, a doctoral researcher at King’s College London, UK.
She added that integrating dietary assessments into routine care could provide additional support for managing psoriasis, given its physical and psychological impact.
Researchers examined data from 257 adults with psoriasis through an online survey. The findings showed a strong link between dietary habits and psoriasis severity, reinforcing the role of nutrition in disease management.
Professor Wendy Hall, an expert in nutritional sciences at King’s College London, emphasized that the study provides much-needed evidence supporting dietary guidance as part of clinical care for psoriasis patients.
As the study confirms diet plays a crucial role in managing psoriasis, researchers stress the need for controlled clinical trials to further examine how healthy, plant-based diets can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
