Mangaluru, Mar 11: The district is currently experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures soaring up to 41°C. This extreme heat poses potential health risks, including heatstroke.
The district disaster management authority, under the deputy commissioner, has issued the following safety guidelines for the public:
- Avoid outdoor activities from 12 pm to 3 pm, when the sun is at its peak.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Wear light-colored clothing: Light colors reflect the sun’s rays, helping to keep you cool, while dark colors absorb heat.
- Protect yourself: Wear protective glasses, hats, or caps to shield yourself from the sun.
- Limit outdoor work: Avoid strenuous activities between 12 pm and 3 pm.
- Avoid dehydrating beverages: Refrain from consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks, as they can cause dehydration.
- Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, as temperatures inside can rise rapidly.
- Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any health complications related to the heat.
- Consume hydrating drinks such as ORS, tender coconut water, lime juice, or buttermilk to cool your body.
- Ensure pets stay in the shade and provide them with fresh water.
- Block direct sunlight by using curtains, sunshades, or shutters during the day. Open windows at night for ventilation.
- Farmers and agricultural workers should wear hats or caps and cover their bodies with wet clothes while working under the sun.
- Avoid overfilling the petrol tank of your vehicle and always park in the shade to prevent overheating.
Measures for heat stroke victims
- Move the person to a shaded area and wipe their body with a wet cloth. Pour cool, but not cold, water on their head to help reduce body temperature.
- Offer ORS, lime juice, or any hydrating beverage to help rehydrate.
- Seek immediate medical attention by taking the victim to the nearest doctor for consultation.
Authorities urge the public to follow these precautions to stay safe during the heat wave.
