New Delhi, Mar 19: A recent study has highlighted that daily physical activity and adequate sleep are essential for boosting happiness and reducing stress levels. The research, conducted by Harvard University (US) and Oxford University (UK), sheds light on how certain lifestyle habits can influence well-being.

The study used data from smartwatches and smartphones to analyze factors that impact happiness and stress, with over 10,000 global participants contributing to the research. The pilot study, carried out in collaboration with smartwatch provider Garmin, aims to provide insights for public policies and product development related to health and well-being.

Key findings of the study indicate that emotional stability tends to improve with age, as older adults displayed more consistency in their emotions, whereas younger adults experienced more fluctuations in emotional states. Additionally, the research revealed that participants felt the happiest when engaging in cultural or social activities, eating, or spending quality time with friends and family.

The study also highlighted the benefits of exercise in managing stress, a conclusion supported by numerous previous studies. Regular physical activity helps regulate stress hormones, release endorphins, and improve mood, contributing to a greater sense of well-being. Moreover, exercise plays a significant role in improving sleep quality, which is often disrupted by stress, further aiding in stress reduction.

Beyond its physical benefits, regular exercise boosts self-esteem and enhances mood, fostering resilience and a sense of control in dealing with stress.

Stress is a growing concern for public health as it is linked to various mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Moreover, stress exacerbates chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and certain cancers. It can also cause gastrointestinal issues, weaken the immune system, and trigger skin problems, as well as affecting the menstrual cycle and fertility.

In fact, stress-related health issues are responsible for the loss of approximately 17 million working days worldwide each year, underlining the importance of stress management for overall health and productivity.
