New Delhi, Apr 12: As Global Capability Centres (GCCs) continue to gain momentum in India, energy-focused GCCs, particularly in the renewable and green energy space, are also witnessing robust growth. These centres are playing a pivotal role in advancing innovation across the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments of the energy value chain.

India remains a top destination globally for setting up GCCs, especially in sectors like oil and gas, power and utilities, renewable energy, and mining. Cities such as Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai are emerging as strategic hubs for energy majors leveraging India's rich talent pool and favourable business climate.

According to a recent EY report, the country now hosts over 30 energy sector GCCs. “Bridging the gap between India’s burgeoning GCC landscape and its comprehensive energy sector is a story of synergy and innovation,” the report stated.

These centres are instrumental in driving digital transformation and automation within the global energy ecosystem. With more than 20,000 professionals currently employed in energy GCCs, India’s skilled workforce including 2.5 million STEM and 1.5 million engineering graduates annually is powering the country’s dominance in the sector.

The renewable energy segment, especially wind energy, is expanding rapidly, with capacity reaching 42.8 GW in April 2023 and projected to hit 63 GW by 2030. Bengaluru, in particular, is emerging as a centre for expertise in turbine micro-siting, GIS mapping, and aerodynamic modelling.

Parallelly, the hydrogen energy sector is gaining traction in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Chennai, which house key talent skilled in hydrogen blending, storage solutions, and refinery operations. This supports India’s ambition to lead in green hydrogen adoption.

“The outlook for GCCs in India’s energy sector is promising, offering new entrants a chance to leverage a favourable business environment and skilled workforce,” the report added. With the market size reaching $64 billion and over 1,700 centres operating across the country, India accounts for 55% of the global GCC market.

By 2030, the number of GCCs in India is expected to grow to between 2,200 and 2,500, with the market size surging to $110 billion and employment projected to cross 2.8 million.
