Udupi, Apr 14: A two-day seminar on competency-based assessment was held at St Cecily’s English Medium Higher Primary School (CBSE), Udupi, on April 10 and 11. The seminar aimed to empower teachers with modern and meaningful methods of student evaluation. The participants included enthusiastic educators from various schools in and around Udupi, along with the teaching faculty of St Cecily’s.
This vibrant and collaborative event commenced with a solemn prayer, setting an optimistic tone for the sessions that followed. The esteemed speakers – Udayakumara, principal, and Mansur Ali, senior co-ordinator, Podar International School, Udupi who are renowned for their vast experience in the field of education and deep commitment to improving teaching and assessment practices were accorded with a warm welcome by faculty member, Cecilia.
Over the course of two days, the speakers emphasized several key aspects of competency-based assessment. Their sessions shed light on the role of assessment in supporting learning, the types of questions that could enhance critical thinking and the importance of asking good questions in the classroom. The discussions also explored the cognitive domains of learning, principles of effective assessments, and the characteristics of a good question such as clarity, relevance, and alignment with learning outcomes.
The engaging and interactive sessions were enriched with real-time examples that deeply resonated with the participants. Both speakers skilfully simplified complex concepts simple making them practical and easily implementable. Teachers were encouraged to reflect on their current practices and adopt more student-cantered approaches to evaluation.
The seminar concluded with a feedback session during which participants expressed their appreciation for the well-organized event and the valuable insights gained. A heartfelt note of gratitude marked the end of the program, leaving every participant content, inspired and ready to implement the rich knowledge acquired. This seminar truly served as a stepping stone toward more meaningful learning and assessment in our classrooms.
