Mumbai, Apr 25: With water levels in three out of seven dams supplying water to Mumbai showing a noticeable decline, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has urged residents to adopt water conservation measures. Although the city’s water supply is expected to last through the coming months, concerns remain due to the rapid decrease in water levels in Modak Sagar, Tansa, and Tulsi dams.
Currently, the total water storage in the seven dams that serve Mumbai stands at just 27%, a figure lower than last year. The seven dams—Modak Sagar, Tansa, Madhya Vaitarna, Vihar, Tulsi, and Upper Vaitarna—have a total capacity of 14,47,363 million liters, with 3,900 million liters supplied daily to meet the city’s needs. However, this year’s increasing heat and high-water demand have led to significant evaporation and reduced storage levels.
In response to these challenges, the Maharashtra state government has approved the use of additional water from the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna reservoirs if levels fall below 10%. This step is part of an ongoing effort to secure Mumbai's water needs, but the Municipal Corporation has emphasized the importance of responsible water use.
To ensure sustainable usage, the Municipal Corporation has recommended the following tips to Mumbaikars:
- Use Water Efficiently: Opt for bucket baths instead of showers to save water.
- Avoid Running Taps: For household chores, use water-filled vessels instead of leaving taps running.
- Wash Vehicles with Care: Use a vessel of water and a wet cloth instead of washing vehicles with a hose.
- Reduce Water Waste: Wipe floors and stairs with a wet rag instead of using large amounts of water for mopping.
- Optimize Washing Machines: Wash as many clothes as possible in one load to maximize water efficiency.
- Install Flow-Limiting Nozzles: Installing these on taps can reduce water flow and save up to two-thirds of water.
- Mindful Water Consumption in Restaurants: Restaurants and hotels are advised to serve water in glasses only when necessary, or use bottled water.
- Fix Leaks Promptly: Residents are encouraged to check plumbing and fix any leaks immediately to prevent wastage.
Currently, the water storage in the city’s seven dams stands at 3,88,971 million liters, which is 5% more than last year’s levels. However, considering the rising temperatures and increasing demand, it remains essential for Mumbaikars to conserve water to ensure the city’s needs are met in the coming months.
