Indore, Jun 7: In a deeply distressing incident at the Mhow civil hospital, a stray dog was seen carrying the body of a newborn infant in its jaws near the hospital’s toilet complex in the early hours of Saturday, prompting an immediate probe by hospital authorities and local police.

According to hospital officials, CCTV footage showed that the incident took place between 1:30 and 2 am. A 17-year-old girl, who had been admitted to the hospital around 9 pm Friday with complaints of colic, was seen entering the toilet area around that time.

Dr. HR Verma, the hospital’s in-charge, told mediapersons: “We suspect that the girl delivered the baby in the toilet. She left the hospital soon after with an unidentified man.”

Shortly after the girl’s disappearance, a stray dog was spotted carrying the lifeless infant away from the toilet area. A vigilant security guard chased away the animal and managed to recover the baby’s body, officials said.

Preliminary investigations suggest the infant was likely stillborn, with the initial post-mortem report indicating a premature delivery. Dr. Verma said the body has been placed in the hospital mortuary while authorities await the detailed post-mortem findings.

“We have shared all CCTV footage with the police, who have begun a thorough investigation into the matter,” Dr. Verma added.

The hospital has pledged full cooperation to the police as they work to trace the young mother and unravel the sequence of events that led to this tragic incident.
