Panaji, Jun 8: Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has admitted that his tone could have been more restrained in the recent controversy involving Chief Medical Officer Dr Rudresh at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), but firmly defended his decision to intervene in the matter.
Rane faced criticism after a video surfaced in which he was seen reprimanding Dr Rudresh following a journalist’s complaint that the doctor allegedly denied medical care to the journalist’s mother-in-law.
"Yes, as the Health Minister, I did intervene and I accept that my tone and words could have been more measured. I’m not above reflection or criticism. I take full responsibility for how I communicated, and I assure you, such an approach will not be repeated," Rane posted on 'X' (formerly Twitter).
However, Rane made it clear that he stood by his actions, stating, "What I will not apologise for, is standing up for a patient who was denied care. Doctors hold a noble position in society... but when arrogance seeps into duty, it is my responsibility to take action."
He further stressed that such conduct cannot be tolerated in a public hospital meant to serve the people. “If we let such behaviour pass unaddressed, we send a message that it is acceptable to deny a senior citizen or any other person medical help. That cannot happen,” he wrote.
