Bhopal, Jun 10: In a significant step towards combating Sickle Cell Anaemia, President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to visit Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh on June 19, coinciding with World Sickle Cell Day. The visit underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to eliminate the disease from the state by 2047.
The President will attend a high-level event dedicated to Sickle Cell Anaemia eradication, to be held at a stadium in Barwani, a tribal-dominated region known for its health challenges. The event will also see the presence of Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and Deputy CM Rajendra Shukla, who also oversees the state's Health and Family Welfare Department.

Ahead of the visit, Chief Minister Yadav highlighted the state’s achievements under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Shahdol in 2023. The mission aims to screen 7 crore individuals aged 0 to 40 years in tribal belts and ensure proper counselling and treatment support.
“As of now, over 90.98 lakh people have been screened, meeting 100% of our initial target. Additionally, 53.87 lakh Sickle Cell cards have been distributed, helping Madhya Pradesh top the country in this initiative,” the Chief Minister stated.
During her visit, President Murmu is expected to address the gathering and participate in multiple other events promoting health awareness. The programme is being closely monitored by the Governor himself, further highlighting its importance to the state and centre alike.
The state’s proactive steps towards screening and awareness, coupled with high-profile participation, mark a decisive push towards eradicating Sickle Cell Anaemia, a disease disproportionately affecting tribal communities.
