Outrage in Goa as police delay arrests in assault case until viral video sparks political pressure

Panaji, Jun 12: A disturbing case of assault in Goa’s popular beach belt has triggered public outrage and exposed deep flaws in law enforcement, after two individuals were arrested more than 60 hours after they were caught on camera brutally attacking restaurant staff in Calangute.

The incident, which occurred on June 8, went unaddressed by police until a 20-second viral video and public criticism forced authorities to act. In the footage, Abhishek Sutar and Deepak Kumar Singh are seen violently assaulting a staff member, throwing punches, kicks, and vandalising the restaurant premises.

Despite eyewitness accounts and clear video evidence, no action was taken until Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Amit Patkar intervened, publicly criticising the inaction and raising the matter with the State’s top police officials.

According to restaurant staff, the two men became violent after refusing to pay their bill and allegedly boasted of political connections, claiming they were untouchable by local authorities or regulatory agencies. One staff member noted, “They come here often, eat and drink without paying. This time, when asked to settle the bill, they turned abusive and violent.”

The delay in police response and the accused’s alleged claims of political protection have raised alarm bells over the influence of VIP culture and selective law enforcement in Goa’s tourism hubs.

Congress leader Patkar, who shared the viral clip, lambasted the police: “Over 60 hours passed without a single arrest despite video proof. What message are we sending? That law in Goa is selective?”

The Calangute Police have since arrested Sutar late Tuesday and Singh on Wednesday, but the damage to public confidence in policing has already been done. The incident has reignited debate on political impunity, VIP privilege, and the urgent need for transparent policing standards in Goa, especially in areas frequented by tourists.

As investigations continue, citizens and civil rights groups are demanding accountability and calling for reforms to ensure swift and impartial justice, regardless of status or political links.
