Heavy rains lash DK, Udupi dists; DC issues directions to monitor situation

Mangaluru, Jun 15: With the possibility of continued heavy rainfall, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan has directed all tahsildars and incident commanders to promptly evacuate families from vulnerable homes to care centres or safer locations.

Strict monitoring of flood-prone areas and readiness of all rescue equipment has been mandated to avoid any loss of life. The deputy commissioner has also instructed that control rooms in all taluks and the city corporation should function round the clock. Any negligence in disaster response operations will be taken seriously, he warned.

 

DC visits affected areas in Mangaluru

DC Mullai Muhilan and Mangaluru city corporation commissioner Ravichandra Naik visited several flood-hit localities in the city and inspected the waterlogging situation. They also visited Pumpwell and discussed with officials the issues related to drainage of rainwater.

12 families shifted to relief centre

In central Mangaluru, including Attavar, rainwater entered houses affecting several families. Twelve families were evacuated and given shelter at a temporary relief centre set up by the city corporation at Purabhavana premises, where food and other essential items were provided. Commissioner Ravichandra Naik visited the centre and took stock of the arrangements.

Heavy rains in Beltangady taluk

Moderate to heavy rainfall was reported across the taluk on Saturday with no damage reported. Rain intensified post-2 pm. A portion of a classroom wall at Kashipatna Government Higher Primary School collapsed during cleaning works, but no injuries occurred. River levels have risen and strong winds and rain were reported at night.

Consistent rain in Puttur, Sullia, Subrahmanya

These areas witnessed steady rain throughout Saturday. After a few days of mild rain, heavier showers began post-noon and continued into the night. Locations including Sullia town, Jalsooru, Mandekolu, Bellare, Aranthodu, Sampaje, Guthigar, Panja, Kollamogru, Subrahmanya, Balpa, Kaikamba, and Bilinele received day-long rain. No damage was reported despite the downpour.

Intense rain across Udupi district; water enters low-lying areas

With a red alert in place, Saturday saw heavy rains across the district. Though water entered low-lying areas in some places, no major incidents were reported. Commuters faced difficulties on waterlogged roads. The red alert is set to end today, but an orange alert has been issued for June 16–17, with further heavy rainfall likely.

Five houses in the district were partially damaged as trees fell due to strong winds and rain, causing an estimated loss of Rs 1.77 lakh. Moderate rain was reported in Byndoor and Kundapur, while areas including Udupi, Manipal, and Parkala received heavier showers in the afternoon. Heavy rain was reported all day in Karkala, Hebri, Padubidri, Brahmavar, Kota, Saligrama, Kaup, Uchila, and Shirva. National highways and main city roads experienced waterlogging, affecting motorists and pedestrians.

Torrential rains in Karkala, Hebri

Areas including Karkala, Hebri, Agumbe, Someshwar, Shivapura, Mudradi, Kabbinale, Marne, Shirlalu, Kervashe, Mal, Mudaru, Durga, Renjala, Kalya, Ninjooru, Bailoor, Kaudoor, and Kukkoondoor received continuous rain from morning to evening. In some locations, trees fell onto power lines causing temporary power outages.
