Mangaluru, May 31: In a sweeping special enforcement drive aimed at curbing road accidents and strengthening road safety compliance, the city police have fined a total of 1,372 two-wheeler riders for violations including riding without helmets and driving against one-way traffic rules.

As part of the crackdown, 1,050 riders were penalised for not wearing helmets, with fines totalling Rs 4,63,500. A further 322 riders were booked for violating one-way traffic regulations, attracting penalties worth Rs 1,61,000, police officials said.

City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the operation was launched in view of the rising number of road accidents involving two-wheelers, many of which result in severe head injuries, fatalities, or life-altering trauma.

He noted that traffic violations such as ignoring helmet rules and driving in the wrong direction on one-way stretches often lead to head-on collisions, pose risks to pedestrians, and disrupt smooth vehicular movement.

‘The special enforcement drive was conducted with the objective of strict implementation of traffic rules and to create public awareness on road safety.

During the operation, checks were carried out at major junctions across the city, along National Highways 66 and 169, as well as in suburban areas and accident-prone locations. Legal action was initiated against all violators,’ he said.

Police have indicated that such intensive drives will continue in the coming days to deter violations and improve overall traffic discipline across the city.
