Verna tragedy: Ponda man succumbs to injuries after being hit by bus

Vasco, Jun 20: In a heart-wrenching incident near the Verna IDC highway, a 45-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a speeding bus while attending to a punctured tyre on his vehicle.

The deceased has been identified as Babush Gaonkar, a resident of Panchwadi in Ponda. According to Verna police, the tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, when Gaonkar was replacing the damaged tyre of his vehicle by the roadside. In a devastating turn of events, a bus, allegedly being driven rashly and negligently by Francisco Pedro Fernandes, a resident of Majorda in Salcete, rammed into him.

Gaonkar suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Goa Medical College (GMC) for treatment. Despite all efforts by the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Verna police have registered an offence against the bus driver, Francisco Fernandes, under charges of rash and negligent driving. The accident reportedly occurred as the bus was travelling from Titan junction towards Loutolim.

The investigation is being led by Sub-Inspector Rajdatt Arsekar, under the supervision of Police Inspector Anand Shirodkar. Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, especially on high-traffic routes like the Verna IDC corridor.
