Pune, Jun 28: A man of Indian origin holding an Australian passport has been arrested by Pune Police for duping a woman of Rs 3.6 crore after posing as 'Dr Rohit Oberoi' on a matrimonial site and promising marriage.

The accused, identified as Abhishek Shukla from Lucknow and currently residing in Perth, Australia, was nabbed at Mumbai airport on Wednesday after a Look-Out Circular was issued against him.

According to police, the victim, a Delhi native living in Pune, had received Rs 5 cr in alimony and was planning to launch a business related to mindfulness and spirituality for children.

Shukla exploited this, proposing a fake international expansion plan, and introduced her to fictitious Singapore-based partners ‘Yvonne Handayani’ and ‘Vincent Kuan’. Over time, she transferred Rs 3.6 cr to accounts in India and Singapore.

In September 2024, she was informed via email that 'Oberoi' had died of cancer. Sensing fraud, she contacted a friend and filed a complaint with Pune Cyber Police in November.

Further probe revealed Shukla had used the fake profile to contact over 3,100 women. “This could be a much bigger racket,” said Additional CP Pankaj Deshmukh.
