Study links ADHD-related insomnia to poorer quality of life in adults

London, Jul 16: A new study has found that sleep disturbances driven by ADHD-related impulsivity may significantly contribute to reduced quality of life in adults experiencing ADHD symptoms. The research, conducted by experts from the University of Southampton, UK, and the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, was recently published in BMJ Mental Health.

The study reveals that traits such as inattention and hyperactivity in adults with ADHD are closely associated with severe insomnia, poor sleep quality, and a natural tendency to stay up and wake late.

Researchers analysed data from the Netherlands Sleep Registry, covering 1,364 middle-aged and older adults. Participants answered questionnaires on ADHD symptoms, insomnia, circadian rhythms, depression, and quality of life.

"Sleep disruption can impact neurobehavioural and cognitive systems, including attention and emotional regulation. At the same time, sleep issues may arise from ADHD-related impulsivity and hyperactivity, creating a reinforcing cycle," explained Dr Sarah L Chellappa, Associate Professor of Psychology and senior author of the study.

The findings showed that adults with ADHD are eight times more likely to suffer from sleep disorders compared to the general population. These can manifest as delayed sleep onset, restless movement during sleep, excessive daytime drowsiness, or reduced night-time sleep duration.

"ADHD traits and insomnia severity were significant predictors of lower quality of life," the researchers wrote, adding that insomnia played a mediating role in this link.

The study also points to possible genetic factors involving sleep and circadian rhythm-related genes in individuals with ADHD.

"Adults with ADHD traits may be more prone to poor sleep, low mood, and reduced life satisfaction," said co-author Dr Samuele Cortese. "More research is needed to explore this complex interaction. A deeper understanding could help in designing treatment options that enhance the well-being of people with ADHD."
