Udupi, Aug 3: An interstate accused has been arrested by the police in connection with a series of house thefts that took place a month ago in Kodankur New Colony, Puttur village, under the jurisdiction of Udupi city police station.
The arrested accused has been identified as Mohammad Asif Betageri (28), a resident of Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district. On July 5, three houses in Kodankur New Colony were reportedly burglarized during the night, and a case was registered with the Udupi town police.

During interrogation, Asif confessed that he, along with his accomplices, had arrived in a vehicle and broke into the three houses in Kodankur at midnight. He admitted to stealing gold ornaments and cash, which were later sold in Bhatkal and Sirsi for monetary gain. The accused has been produced before the court.
Based on the information provided by the accused, police have recovered gold ornaments weighing approximately 95.5 grams and 255 grams of silver, collectively valued at around Rs 8.5 lac, which were sold and disposed of in Bhatkal and Sirsi.
Asif further revealed that he had committed similar house thefts in the jurisdictions of Sagar town and Nyamathi police stations. He also admitted involvement, along with his brother Arif, Anees, and relative Saleem and Shoaib, in multiple theft and other criminal cases in Goa and Uttar Pradesh.
Udupi SP Hariram Shankar stated that Asif's brother Arif and other accomplices involved in the Udupi city police station case are currently absconding and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend them.
